Mawlid al Nabi lands this Thursday, 27 August. For once, nobody is waiting on a moon sighting to find that out: the Ministry of Labour named the date back in December. That means the only real question left is whether your roster and your customer messages are actually ready, or whether Thursday is going to cost you more than it should.
The date is not the surprise this year
Until recently, a holiday like Mawlid only became certain a day or two before it arrived, once the moon sighting was confirmed. Rosters got built on guesswork and fixed at the last minute. That changed for 2026: the Ministry of Labour published the full list of national and religious holidays at the start of the Gregorian year, and Prophet's Birthday was fixed as Thursday, 27 August. Only Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha still wait on the moon.
That is genuinely useful, but only if someone acted on it in December. If your team is only now checking who is on shift Thursday, you are not late by Oman's standards, but you are later than you needed to be.
What holiday pay actually costs you
Oman's Labour Law is specific about this. If someone works on an official holiday, you owe them their normal day's wage plus an extra 100 percent of their basic daily wage, in cash, or you give them a full day of rest in lieu. There is no third option, and you cannot simply schedule someone and pay them their usual salary.
Front desks, call centres and service teams that never fully close have to decide, branch by branch, which staff work Thursday and how they get compensated. Here is how that decision looks with real numbers.
| Option | What it costs in cash | What it means for the roster |
|---|---|---|
| Pay the double rate | Basic daily wage OMR 12 plus 100 percent extra, so OMR 24 per staff member, OMR 48 total for two people on duty | No day owed later. The cost lands on this month's payroll and the books are closed |
| Give a compensatory day off instead | No extra cash this week | You now owe two staff a full day off, which usually lands on a week you are already short handed |
| Close the desk for the day | Zero direct wage cost | Every call that day goes unanswered or to voicemail, and those calls do not simply wait patiently |
Run the same table with your own daily wage and your own headcount. The maths does not change, only the numbers do.
The date was never the mystery this year. Whether you used the three months of notice is.
Building the roster this week
With the date fixed since December, there is no excuse for a Wednesday night scramble. A short, practical checklist gets most service desks through Thursday without drama.
- Decide today which shifts must stay staffed on Thursday and which can safely go to voicemail or a holiday message.
- Ask each rostered staff member in writing whether they prefer cash or a compensatory day, and confirm it before Thursday, not after.
- Pencil in when the compensatory day gets taken, ideally not during a week you already know will be busy.
- Brief whoever is on call about which enquiries count as urgent enough to interrupt their holiday, and which can wait until Friday.
What customers hear while you are closed
In Dhofar, khareef season is still pulling visitors into Salalah at a pace far above a normal August, so a hotel or clinic there cannot simply go quiet on Thursday the way a Muscat office might. Even outside Dhofar, a booking that comes in at nine that evening should not sit unanswered until Saturday morning.
A short holiday message on your IVR and WhatsApp, in both Arabic and English, does most of the work: state the holiday, state when normal hours resume, and give one channel for anything genuinely urgent. Some operations leads go further and route the desk through CustomerCare.OM for the holiday itself, since it understands callers who mix Arabic and English mid sentence, logs every enquiry as a note the team can work through once the holiday ends, and never needs a day off in lieu.
Whichever way you cover Thursday, a genuinely urgent case, a guest locked out, a patient in pain, still needs a real person on the other end, so make sure your escalation rule is clear before the holiday starts, not during it.
We fixed our Mawlid roster in December the day the ministry published it. The only thing we scrambled for this week was the WhatsApp message.
What this means for you
Check your Thursday roster today, not Wednesday night. Confirm in writing whether each rostered person is taking cash or a day in lieu, because that decision changes both your payroll and next week's coverage. Post your holiday message on the phone line, WhatsApp and website before Thursday morning, and name one person who is reachable for anything that truly cannot wait.
Is 27 August definitely the holiday, or could it still shift?
The Ministry of Labour fixed 27 August for 2026 in its December announcement. Unlike Eid, this date does not wait on a separate moon sighting confirmation.
Do I have to pay double if staff work the holiday?
Oman's Labour Law requires the normal day's wage plus 100 percent extra in cash, or a full compensatory day off. You choose one, not a lesser version of either.
What if we just close the desk for the day?
That avoids wage cost but not the cost of the calls themselves. Unanswered enquiries during a holiday often turn into lost bookings, not patient customers who simply call back.
The bottom line
Mawlid falling this Thursday is not the problem this year, the ministry told everyone months ago. The problem, if there is one, is a roster and a customer message that never got built on the notice you already had. Fix both today and Thursday runs itself.
